You know those call centres that everybody hates? You know, those people who call up and ask you if you’re happy with your current internet provider? Yeah those guys. I hate those guys.

So anyway, I have a question – are you happy with your current internet provider? I ask because with the start of the new academic year and many of you moving from student halls into shared accommodation, you’re gonna need to sort out your own broadband in a lot of households – and our job is to help you get the cheapest package for your purpose. So without further ado, in no particular order:

1Virgin Media

Old reliable, Virgin Media offers super-fast speeds of up to 200Mbps. All of their packages utilise their trademark DOCSIS® 3 – Virgin Media call it “the magic in our cables” which sets apart their connection from competitors.

They run 9 month contracts to fit in with your academic year and basic package prices range from £34 a month for 50Mbps or £39 for 100Mbps. They also offer a 200Mbps deal for those in larger households for £47 a month. All packages require a £15 activation fee, but no line rental payment. They also include free services and repairs which goes a long way for if your internet goes down and the whole house lose their minds.

2BT

BT has two offers that appeal to students. Their first, Unlimited Infinity 1 offers speeds of up to 52Mbps. Boasting UK’s most powerful wifi signal and unlimited monthly usage the Unlimited Infinity 1 package also gives users 100GB of BT cloud storage. This offer provides BT’s own Virus Protect for two devices and BT Sport.

Their second offer, Unlimited Infinity 2 provides speeds of up to 76Mbps, unlimited monthly usage, 500GB BT cloud storage, Virus Protect for 15 devices and BT sport. Both offers also come with a £25 costa coffee voucher, and if a couple of iced frappuccinos aren’t a big enough incentive then nothing is.

The costs vary by only £6 a month, the first offer £20 whilst the second £26, however they do also charge an £18.99 month line rental. Both are 9-month contracts, however the Unlimited Infinity 1 requires a £49 infinity activation.

3Vodafone

Vodafone offer some of the cheaper packages on the list, their prices ranging from £22 a month to £28 – however their contracts are also the longest. Their Unlimited Standard Broadband package offers speeds of up to 17Mbps with unlimited usage. There is, however, a £60 charge to switch your home line to Vodafone if it isn’t already. Their second package – Unlimited Fibre 38 – is £25 for new customers, no landline fee and offers speeds of up to 38Mbps. Their third and final package, Unlimited Fibre 76 offers speeds of up to 76Mbps and costs £28 a month.

Both Unlimited Fibre packages require a £49 installation fee and all three packages come with 6 months free SAFE anti-virus software.

4Sky

Perhaps the most appealing package, Sky offers students 9 months free Sky Broadband Unlimited – on a 9 month contract.. Is that right? 9 months free broadband on a 9 month contract? Well, not quite. It’s unlimited so you can download all you want, however the contract does come with a £17.40 a month Sky Line Rental… so… not really ‘free’ per se. Sky take care of everything from their side, so if you’re already with another provider, their dedicated ‘Switch Squad’ will have you transferred over in no time at all.

Despite the vicious, vicious deception, it’s still the cheapest 9 month contract on the list, and Sky Broadband boast the best overall customer service satisfaction compared to all other internet and home line providers (Ofcom Report, Jan 2016).

5TalkTalk

TalkTalk offers up to 17Mbps of totally unlimited broadband for only £3.75 a month, plus £17.70 monthly line rental. If 17Mbps isn’t enough, they also have another package for £8.75 monthly also with the additional line rental. These fibre packages are 4.5x faster than their first 17Mbps package, offering 38Mbps with the medium package, 76Mbps with the large and both totally unlimited. All three packages come with their award winning super router for a fast, reliability connection and their free internet security – SuperSafe Boost. As an extra incentive, you’ll receive a £75 Love2Shop Voucher. TalkTalk contracts are also 18 months which means they aren’t as malleable as the 9 month counterparts.
