Last Monday (11 April) Eliza and the Bear graced HMV Southampton with their presence for a brief acoustic set and signing for their fans. A band with a strong reputation for their energetic live performances but that performs even better acoustically is rare to find, yet Eliza and the Bear are exactly that. The Essex-based quintet that have just released their self-titled album, Eliza and the Bear also played a show at The Joiners after hosting a sold out show in January in the same venue.
Their eponymously-titled debut album has been a hit, with old favourites like ‘Friends’ and ‘It Gets Cold’ proving to be just as popular now as they always have been. However, the rest are just as impressive; the most noticeable tracks being ‘Oxygen’ and ‘I’m On Your Side’, both tracks that, although contrasting each other in rhythms and riffs, display the flexibility and musical ability of the band as a whole.
Their signing was eagerly waited for by a relatively long queue in HMV Southampton. The bubbly atmosphere and eager anticipation was almost tangible as three of the five members of Eliza and the Bear took to the stage to perform four of their songs from their debut album: Light It Up, It Gets Cold, Oxygen and Friends. Encouraging their fans to move in closer and sing along as loud as they could, the group performed these four songs completely acoustically, excluding the piano, and wowed the intimate crowd with their skills.
Currently finishing off a tour of the UK, playing some shows with Twin Atlantic, a well-known Scottish band, Eliza and the Bear have also recently been starring in the BBC Live Lounge (see video above) and Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch. Having previously supported the likes of Paramore, Imagine Dragons and AWOLNATION it’s clear this band has a bright future ahead, so keep an eye on them. They may be coming your way soon!
