2018 is certainly looking like a packed year for cinema lovers. With loads of superhero films, sequels and action in store, we tried to narrow it down to a top 5 – check it out below!
5. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Not much is known about the sequel to 2015’s Jurassic World, apart from the title. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas-Howard have both signed on to reprise their roles as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing. Upon release, Jurassic World became the 3rd highest-grossing film of all time, trailing only Titanic and Avatar, so a sequel was never in doubt.
Director of Jurassic World and producer of the upcoming instalment, Colin Trevorrow, has claimed that the sequel will be a different type of film to its predecessors. Speaking to Wired, he said: “This isn’t always going to be limited to theme parks. What if this went open source? It’s almost like InGen is Mac, but what if PC gets their hand on it? What if there are 15 different entities around the world who can make a dinosaur?”
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will be released in the UK on 7th June 2018.
4. Tomb Raider
The cinematic return of one of gaming’s most iconic women, Lara Croft, is upon us. Alicia Vikander takes over from Angelina Jolie as the main star. The film will serve as a prequel of sorts, with Vikander playing a younger and less experienced Croft. The film comes after the game reboot back in 2013, with some likenesses being depicted between the two versions of Lara in some promo shots.
Den of Geek reported director Roar Uthaug saying: “I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that’s definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well. I think we’ll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I’m hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise.”
Tomb Raider will be released in the UK on 16th March 2018. Check out the trailer for it here:
3. Solo: A Star Wars story
Now that we are in the age of yearly Star Wars films, there was always going to be a back story for a much-loved character. This comes in the shape of Solo, which focuses on Han Solo. Alden Ehrenreich taking the mantle from the legendary Harrison Ford.
The official synopsis says: “The story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.”
With the success of the first Star Wars spin off, Rogue One, fans will be eagerly awaiting how the portrayal of a new Solo plays out.
Solo: A Star Wars Story will be released in the UK on 25th May 2018.
2. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
The sequel to the Harry Potter spin off was met with rave reviews and satisfied fans. The recently announced title for the new film, The Crimes of Grindelwald has begun the hype heading towards next November.
Cast announcements including Jude Law as Dumbledore and Johnny Depp’s continued inclusion has caused a stir but with two well-known, critically acclaimed actors having major roles in the franchise, it can only be a good thing. As well as this, fans will get to meet new characters including Newt Scamander’s brother, and his mysterious friend, Leta Lestrange.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will be released in the UK on 16th November 2018.
1. Avengers: Infinity War
Since 2008, Marvel have been releasing films based on their comic book heroes left, right and centre. And as Nick Fury states in the newly released trailer: “There was an idea.”
That idea, introducing all of these heroes into a single universe and bringing them together, has all lead up to this film in what is guaranteed to be one of the biggest of all time. The only concern is that due to the sheer amount of characters, how will they all fit in?!
The hype for this film is so incredible that Marvel just announced that the trailer broke the all-time record for number of views in a single day across various platforms, with over 200 million.
Avengers: Infinity War will be released in the UK on 27th April 2018. Check out the record-breaking trailer here:
